Located on the ‘Backbone of England’ in the Yorkshire Pennines, Johnsons Wellfield extracts the renowned Crosland Hill Natural Hard Yorkstone from the largest dimensional sandstone reserves in Britain and crafts premium-quality building materials in one of the country’s best-equipped stone working plants.
Established in 1854 the famous Wellfield Quarries came into Johnson’s ownership in 1928 and was acquired by the Myers Group some 50 years later. Investment has continued under Myers Group stewardship and the business is now at the forefront of the UK stone industry, producing in excess of 60,000 square metres of dimensional stone on an annual basis.

What Is Yorkstone?
‘Yorkstone’ is a sandstone, a sedimentary rock comprising mainly of quartz with a small proportion of other minerals such as feldspar and mica. It has provided a tried and tested building material across the UK for hundreds of years.
Despite the widespread use of the name ‘Yorkstone’, the genuine article can only be sourced from the county of Yorkshire. Crosland Hill Natural Hard Yorkstone is widely regarded as being the finest Yorkstone available.
Crosland Hill Yorkstone possesses an ideal balance across a range of technical requirements giving the mineral an unparalleled flexibility of use whilst maintaining the critical hardness and durability required for longevity of the finished product.
Medium to fine grained, Crosland Hill Yorkstone is light buff in colour and has naturally occurring colour variations which are enhanced by general weathering as the stone matures. Since 1961 Johnsons Wellfield has been the sole company working the Crosland Hill Natural Hard Yorkstone reserves.
